Letter to the Community from Providence Physicians
As doctors who work with Providence, we are proud to serve Orange County—home to some of the finest hospitals and physician networks in the state thanks to a shared commitment to excellence. Through the affiliation between Hoag Memorial Hospital and Providence Mission, St. Joseph and St. Jude hospitals in Orange County, our communities benefit from our shared resources, innovation and dedication to achieving superior outcomes for our patients. The pandemic underscored the need for our collaboration and our belief that Providence and Hoag are better together.
We have several examples of how we have worked together during this health crisis. Providence facilitated the participation of Hoag in a remdesivir clinical trial, provided Hoag with additional remdesivir after their supply ran low, and upon Hoag’s request, a Providence hospital treated critically ill Hoag patients with life-saving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment.
We always have maintained collegial relationships with Hoag doctors as respected colleagues, friends and neighbors. But we cannot idly stand by and allow the continued spread of a false narrative about the relationship between the two organizations.
Despite claims made otherwise, Hoag chose to pursue other insurance contracts outside the ones we jointly negotiated over the years, knowing the continued participation of Hoag-affiliated specialists within the existing network would be terminated. This choice by Hoag was an unfortunate one. It is a detriment to our patients and community members at a time when they need us most.
Since Hoag leaving the network was not Providence’s doing, Hoag is welcome to rejoin the network anytime. Our desire is to continue as a unified family of organizations that provide exceptional patient care, not as competitors. To say that we are disappointed in Hoag’s decision to leave the network at all, let alone during an unprecedented health crisis, is an understatement.
We value our Hoag colleagues and fully believe we are better able to care for the health and wellness of Orange County when we work together.
