The Providence family of organizations, including Providence St. Jude Medical Center, Providence St. Joseph Hospital of Orange, Providence Mission Hospital, Hoag and Providence Medical Groups, "the affiliation," provides a strong network of nationally recognized hospitals and medical groups working collaboratively to advance the health of Orange County.
At Providence, we’re committed to ensuring health and social needs are continually addressed across Southern California – while also meeting the specific needs of Orange County patients and residents. Our hospitals and caregivers within the county have a deep understanding of local communities, and bring more comprehensive, compassionate care to each person we serve.
This long-standing commitment to service includes bettering the communities we call home by providing resources to improve quality of life, especially for the most poor and vulnerable. Our combined efforts have led to greater resources, community benefit investments, and increased access to care for Orange County residents.
Having served the Orange County community for decades, Providence is attuned to the health issues of the region and is dedicated to meeting and exceeding resident’s health needs for decades to come.
We Believe Collaboration is Key.
The affiliation has provided immense benefits to the Orange County region by ensuring access to Orange County’s premier care network—meaning more locations in a multitude of practice areas, greater access to specialists and top doctors, innovative and collaborative treatment, and overall better value and community care at a lower cost. Together, our Orange County hospitals are able to provide awarding-winning care through advanced technology, clinical trials and research and the expertise of more than 2,600 highly skilled physicians.
The affiliation has also provided significant savings and health benefits to the Orange County community as a result of our partnership of Accountable Care Organizations that proactively manage care, saving millions of dollars.
Providence St. Jude Medical Center, Providence St. Joseph Hospital of Orange, Providence Mission Hospital and Hoag have all achieved numerous awards from U.S. News World Report, HealthGrades and Women's Choice Awards, among others. These accolades and accomplishments are a true testament to the award-winning care with reduced fragmentation and duplication of services that we provide to Orange County.
A Message From Our Chief Executive Erik Wexler
Hello, my name is Erik Wexler, and I’m the chief executive of Providence Southern California. I want to help you understand the facts on Hoag’s desire to seek independence from its affiliation with Providence.
We were surprised and disappointed when Hoag filed a lawsuit to dissolve the affiliation in the midst of an unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Let me be clear: At Providence, we’re working to preserve this affiliation because we believe it’s in the best interest of Orange County. Not only has this affiliation strengthened Hoag but it has also provided Orange County with a strong network of leading-edge, nationally recognized medical centers and affiliated physician networks that reduce the duplication of services and advance health of our entire community.
Benefits of the affiliation enabled Hoag to participate in Providence Clinical Institutes, effectively reducing hospitalization and readmission rates and lowering emergency room visits by 10,000 in just the first year of the affiliation. Providence also invested in the Hoag Orthopedic Institute to expand this care in Orange County, and we installed and activated Epic at Hoag, one of the nation’s leading medical record systems. Providence made it possible for Hoag to participate in the experimental Remdesivir drug clinical trial, extending a potentially promising treatment to Hoag patients during this devastating and on-going health crisis. Our Heritage Medical Group helped to launch the Hoag Medical Group and has provided services to that group for many years so that they could grow and serve more of the community.
This mission of service is what we will continue to focus on, no matter the outcome of the legal dispute. Our hospitals and physicians have faithfully served the people of Orange County for nearly 100 years, and we will remain wholly focused on meeting the health challenges that impact the region, whether it’s COVID-19, better management of chronic illness, addressing mental health concerns, or expanding access to care. Providence’s number one priority has been, and will continue to be, ensuring the health and well-being of our beloved Orange County community.
